Young gun Reese Cates began his bull riding career at a young age when he started riding sheep, calves, and steers. At the age of 14, he got on his first bull and has been going head to head with them ever since. Through trial and error and help from family, Cates began to emerge as a true competitor for the best bull riders in the world. When asked who his role models were, Cates replied, "Growing up, I liked Chris Shivers and Justin McBride. I looked up to them a lot, but now I just want to beat them."
The Arkansas native found himself taking on the top bull riders in the world when he qualified for his first Built Ford Tough Series event at the start of the 2008 season. Finally getting to ride on the elite tour was one of Cates' proudest moments. He capped off his first season riding on the prestigious tour by finishing first in the 2008 PBR Daisy Rookie of the Year race after winning almost $200,000.
